WHO WE ARE

The Savage Papakāinga Land Trust is the governance entity for land block Lot 39A Sec. 2A Parish of Matata.
Our role is as a caretaker of the taonga handed down to us by our tipuna, for the benefit of whānau and all future generations.

HISTORY

On 18 March 2018, the trust order was sealed by the Māori Land Court which gave the new trustees the right to govern. The first official trustee meeting was held on 15 April 2018.

As of June 2024, Lot 39A Sec. 2A Parish of Matata currently has a total of 149 landowners recorded who are either as an individual owner or a whānau trust.

These landowners are represented by the whenua’s governing entity – Savage Papakāinga Land Trust. The Trust Board currently consists of six trustees as follows:

Meet your Trustees

Phyl Savage - Board ChairKo Phyl Savage tōku ingoa. Ka moe a Te Mene rāua ko Taati ka puta ko tōku pāpā a Charles Cleeve Boy Savage. Born and raised in Kawerau and involved in many ways with the pool block, it is an honour to be serving as a trustee and now chair of the Savage Papakāinga Land Trust. I come with a background of governance, strategy and leadership and stand behind our values of rangatiratanga, kaitiakitanga, kotahitanga and manaakitanga. I am currently employed by the Māori Land Court as Pae Tohutohu (Technical Advisor) for the Waiāriki District, am the proud mama of Shikyra-Lee and nanny to Tukaea, Awhireinga and the moko that is on its way.

Carrie Tairua Savage - Deputy ChairE noho ana au ki toku taumata, he Maunga nekeneke, he maunga nukunuku, Ko Putauaki te Maunga tapu e. He mokopuna tuarua ahau ō Hami raua ko Awarua, he mokopuna ō Pateriki Savage, a, Ko Steve Hami Savage toku pāpā engari i whakatipu ā Harawira raua ko Lesley i ahau, ko au ta rāua whāngai. It is my honour and privilege to be a kaitiaki of our whenua and serve our whānau as a Trustee on the Savage Papakainga Land Trust. I have been extremely fortunate to have been mentored by some extraordinary leaders within many different sectors which has shaped my passion and drive for the restoration and preservation of Mana within whānau, hapū and iwi. I believe my skill set, knowledge base and passion add value to the Board and I am confident in the abilities I bring to the table. Hei whakaau ki taku moe e, ko, koia e ara e!

Marty Niao - TrusteeThe fourth youngest of five siblings, son to Terry Niao & Joyce Vercoe and mokopuna to Kaka & Arahia Niao (nee Savage). At an early age our family relocated from Te Teko to Edgecumbe where I spent my childhood and teenage years growing up and educated. I left home after finishing college to study at Waikato University in 1995 for 5 years. I then moved back to the Eastern Bay of Plenty (Whakatane) in 1999 where I started employment at Norske Skog Tasman. Whilst employed at Tasman I continued studying extramurally doing a Bachelor of Business Studies through Massey University. I’ve held previous governance roles as board member and executive for the Pulp & Paper Workers Union, executive and regional manager for NABBA NZ (National Amateur Bodybuilding Association), director of my own company since 2007 and more recently, co-chair of the Savage Papakainga Land Trust since 2018, where I now remain as a trustee & currently a director for the trusts Limited Partnership investments arm, Savage Assets Holdings Ltd. My full-time commitment is managing and operating my own business Sunny Gymz in Whakatane, proud father to my two tamariki and husband to my wife of over 22 years.

Anthony Tangihia Savage - TrusteeHe uri ahau na Wharepapa Petera raua ko Mihipeka Hoani Kereme au I taku mana ki te whenua mai I oku tupuna Wharepapa me Mihipeka It is my honour and privilege as Ahi Kaa and serve the whānau as a Trustee on the Savage Papakainga Land Trust. I have spent my entire life in Onepu on both adjacent blocks. I have a passion to see our Savage Whānau thrive, grow, and prosper for our mokopuna. Whanau Mana, Whenua Māori ki toki ngakau – We are fortunate to be the caretakers of the whenua left to us from our tipuna. I am humbled to have this opportunity to ensure our whenua will be passed down to the next generation in a healthier and wealthier position.

William Doney - Trustee As a trustee for six years, I’m honoured to help our trust grow for the good of our whānau. I’m the son of Christina Doney and grandson of Lily Warbrick and Cleveland Paroa Warbrick Savage, and I’m proud to continue their legacy of service. I’ve also served as president of several sports clubs and other trusts and work as a manager at Covenant Homes and Joinery. I focus on building strong whanaungatanga and planning for a sustainable future. With a commitment to manaakitanga and tino rangatiratanga, I’m here to support our kaupapa and the wellbeing of our people.
